One of the most common issues our patients have is pain in the heel. Sometimes it hurts bad with your first step in the morning and then loosens up. Sometimes it starts hurting after an active day. Others will describe a “shooting” sensation when they walk and others a dull ache. Regardless of how it feels, heel pain can be debilitating and can get in the way of your everyday life.
What causes heel pain?
Pain in the heel could be from any number of things. Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause, but other possibilities could include stress fracture, bone bruise, tendinitis, and nerve entrapment. It is very important that a patient undergo a thorough examination to properly diagnose it. At Elite Foot and Ankle we spend the time necessary with our patients to perform a proper biomechanical exam and, in most cases, in-office x-rays. This allows us to make accurate diagnoses which will put you on the path to a quicker recovery.
What can be done to treat it?
The good news is that around 95% of patients with heel pain respond well to conservative therapies. Conservative therapies start with addressing your shoe wear and biomechanics. Sometimes something as simple as stretching and proper orthotics are all that is needed. Other common conservative therapies include steroid injections and physical therapy. Here at Elite Foot and Ankle Associates we also have cutting edge conservative modalities like Radial Shockwave Therapy and Low-Level Laser Therapy. These are showing great promise in recent studies and can make a huge impact on your road to recovery. In some instances, surgery is required. If this happens to be the case, Elite Foot and Ankle has skilled surgeons who are implementing minimally invasive techniques to minimize your down time.
Life is too short for heel pain. If you or a loved one are suffering, come in for an evaluation. Your road to recovery begins now!
